Zona was born Nov. 10, 1916 in Fort Griffin, Texas, the daughter of Otto Leopold Kunkel and Emilia Wilhelm Kunkel. She lived in Throckmorton, Texas until her parents moved to Abilene, Texas in 1923. She was a 1933 graduate of Lubbock High School and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1937. She worked toward her Masters degree at the University of Chicago. Zona taught high school in Tuscola, Texas for one year and then at Post, Texas for one year. She married Udell Brown on Feb. 9, 1940 at the First Christian Church in Post, Texas.
