Graveside services for Mr. Verlon Ray Eubanks of Windom, will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the Elwood Cemetery, under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. The family will visit with friends immediately following the graveside at the cemetery.
Verlon passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at the age of 96. He was born in Ivanhoe, Texas on August 6, 1923, the oldest of six children to Dewey M. and Jewell (Tucker) Eubanks.
He married Mary Etta Rue in September 1942 in Bonham, Texas. They moved to Grapevine, Texas in 1945 where he worked at Consolidated Aircraft. After the war he started his own construction company and auto body shop, and he and Mary welcomed their only child, Darla Rae. In 1968, he and his son-in-law opened Regional Yamaha Center of Grapevine. Verlon was also an avid Ham Radio operator as WA5FDJ and loved to talk about the people he met from all over the world through the radio. He loved to tinker on old cars and even built one out of spare parts that appeared in national magazine. He and Mary Etta moved back to Elwood, Texas in 1971 where he was very involved in the Elwood Baptist Church and community. Mary Etta passed away in April 1983. Verlon reconnected with grade school friend, Melba Chambers and they were married in November 4, 1983 and continued to live in Elwood until 2017 when they moved to Windom.
Verlon was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dorothy Carlile and Lois Anita Eubanks, brothers, Doris Glenn Eubanks and Earl Clifton Eubanks, and grandson-in-law Maj. Nathan Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Melba Eubanks, daughter and son-in-law, Darla and Ric Cooper of Elwood, sister, Wanda and Don Nimblett of Godbey, Texas, step children Stan and Sheri Thedford of Windom and Mauvelyn Thedford; granddaughters, Angela Cooper and Amanda Cooper Anderson of McKinney, Texas, grandson, Terence Cooper of Yuba, Oklahoma and six great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren, Tabetha Ortega, Jason and Casi Thedford, Adrianna and Donald Osborn, Cherie and Michael Davis, and Michael Thedford; 13 step great grandchildren.
