Sylvia Jean Shaw

April 8, 1938 — July 25, 2015

Memorial Services for Sylvia Walton Shaw, 77, of Bonham will be held at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Bethlehem Baptist Church. Reverend Stuart P. Courtney will officiate with the assistance of Reverend Cecil R. Jones. Sylvia departed this life on July 25, 2015 at the Seven Oaks Nursing Home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born April 8, 1938 in Camden, Arkansas and was the older of two girls born to the late Marsh Bates Walton and Alcenia Billingsley Walton. When Sylvia was six years of age she, her parents and sister, Rose, moved to Bonham, Texas at which time Mr. and Mrs. Walton accepted positions of Principal and teacher at the Booker T. Washington School.

Sylvia shared a close relationship with her classmates and graduated class valedictorian in 1955 from Washington School. She was academically gifted and was the recipient of a tuition scholarship to attend Texas Southern University; Houston, Texas. After two years at TSU, Sylvia was awarded a full academic scholarship to attend Freedmen's Nursing School at Howard University, Washington D.C. in 1960. After graduation she was employed at medical facilities in Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Georgia, Bonham, and Sherman, Texas.

Sylvia loved nursing and was a dedicated and caring person who touched the lives of her patients. At Freedman's, Sylvia was known as "Tex". She was often seen sporting her cowboy boots, fringe suede jacket and was the life of the party.

Sylvia was very kind and her kindness extended to a love for animals. She devoted much of her spare time enjoying all sporting events and was a "die hard" Cowboy fan. She liked competition and the challenge of completing a crossword puzzle.

Sylvia adored her son David Shaw Jr. who preceded her in death. Her marriage to David Shaw Sr. ended in divorce.

Sylvia lived with her loving and devoted daughter, Marsha Dickson and they shared many happy times together. Her most memorable and enjoyable times were when she was in the company of family, especially her cousins and the Walton Clan from Sherman.

In addition to Marsha, left to cherish precious memories are her loving sister, Rose Parker (Roscoe) of Silver Springs, Maryland, nephew Jeffrey Parker, Derwood, Maryland; niece Jennifer Porter (Stanley); grand nieces, Kirby and Haley Porter of Chevy Chase, Maryland; Aunts Billye Jo Walton, Sherman, Texas; Ella Billingsley of Lexa, Arkansas; and a host of loving cousins and friends.

Family will receive friends an hour prior to service time.

Repast immediately following at the L.S. Wilson Fellowship Hall.
