Sue passed away Thursday, December 1, 2022 at home, lovingly surrounded by family, her dog, Happy and grand-dogs.
Sue was born June 14, 1927 in Ambrose, Texas, the daughter of Roy and Mary Ela Phillips. She graduated from Bonham High School and attended Texas Women's University. She married Jimmie Collins on May 17, 1949 in Bonham at the manse of First Presbyterian Church, where her services will be held. She has been a member of this church for 73 years, served as an elder many years, and is currently considered the "matriarch" of the church. Sue considered her greatest accomplishment in life to be a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and loyal friend to her family and community. She retired from Lone Star Gas, where she had become instrumental in traveling to various offices in the northeast Texas area to help solve problems in office management. Sue's language of love was cooking. She was known for baking and creating luscious feasts for her family, church members, bridge couples and anyone she wanted to know better. She felt the best conversations and sharing happened around the dining table. She was skilled in sewing, knitting, crocheting and caning chairs. Much of her handiwork will live on in the homes of her family and friends. Sue loved being with people and was active in Women of the Church, where she was awarded a Lifetime Membership, Pink Ladies at Bonham Regional Hospital, Meals on Wheels; driving patients for treatment for the American Cancer Society, supporting the Goodlands Boys Home, serving as president of the Ravenna Cemetery for over 50 years and being involved in her children and grandchildren's activities. Christmas was always special at "Memaw's" house, where grandchildren still want to come sleep over for a couple of days of eating, games and laughter.
In retirement, Sue and Jimmie returned to Ravenna to live as 5th generation on her family's land. They created a vineyard and were known for inviting the church members to harvest the grapes, followed by a huge breakfast on the lawn. Another garden was planted with iris. They were members of the Fannin County Iris Society and won best of show one year. They loved to square dance early on and later were members of multiple bridge clubs. The greatest joy of any of these activities were the people they met who became dear friends.
Sue is survived by her children, Eddie Collins of Ravenna, TX, Minnette and David
Bilbo of College Station, TX, David and Vicki Collins of Midlothian, TX, and Emilie
Collins of Pottsboro, TX; grandchildren, Ross Collins (Claire), Taylor Hebert (Jake),
Phillip Collins (Courtney), Michelle Swanzy (Nick), and AshLee Bilbo, great-grand-
children, June Collins, Mary Jane, Miles and Collin Hebert and Noah and Olivia
Swanzy, her dog, Happy and extended family.
