Graveside services for Sam Devault, 92, of Bonham, will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, Jan. 11, 2013 in Dodd City Cemetery under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Dr. Gene Owen will officiate. Sam passed away Tuesday night, Jan. 8, 2013 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital-WNJ in Sherman.
James Samuel "Sam" Devault was born June 18, 1920 in Dodd City, Texas, the son of James Leonard Devault and Grace Jo Taylor Devault. He attended school in the Lannius Community of Fannin County. Sam was a US Army Air Force veteran of WWII. He married Anna Mirel Grissom, and she preceded him in death, Mar. 31, 1966. He later married Reba Edwards Hodges on Dec. 5, 1970 in Hurst, Texas. She preceded him in death on Jan. 23, 1996. Sam worked for Wise Funeral Home at two different times in his career. He liked to tell the story of how "Big Joe" (Joe Denton, Sr.) got him out of the field to work for him at the funeral home where he drove an ambulance and was a funeral attendant. He then went to work at Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center where he retired. Following his retirement, Sam returned to work for Wise Funeral Home for a second time. His love of people and knowledge of Fannin County residents made him a tremendous asset. He was a true 'people person' and enjoyed playing Bingo and dominos with his friends at Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home. He was a member of Dodd City Church of Christ. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Joe, Jack, Glenn, Gerald and Charles Devault, and a sister, Dorothy Devault.
He is survived by his son, James Len Devault and wife, Letha of Bonham, TX, daughter, Gloria Ballard and husband, Glen "Bo" of Dodd City, TX, stepdaughter, Shirley Crable and husband, Bill of Bonham, TX, brother, David Earl Devault of Dodd City, TX,
sister, Betty Sue Terpening of Phoenix, AZ, brother-in-law, Wylie Grissom of Windom, TX,
sisters-in-law, Mary Bartlett of Bonham, TX, Ima Spelce of Arlington, TX, Wilma Crossland of Pattonville, TX, 3 grandchildren, Kristie Devault, Greg Ballard and wife, Jenifer, and Galen Ballard and wife, RoyAnn, all of Bonham, TX, 4 great grandchildren, Ashlyn Marie Ballard, Austin Ballard, Colton Ballard and Garret Ballard
1 Great Great Grandson, Jacoby Ballard, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family requests memorials to the Dodd City Cemetery Association or the American Heart Association.
