Richard J. MacConnell (Rich), 83 passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at his home

A Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, May 4th at Wise Funeral Home in Bonham, Texas with visitation beginning at 1pm and service starting at 2pm.  Reverend Beverly Olsen and Reverend Dana Coker will be officiating.

Rich was born August 22, 1937 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Richard and Robena MacConnell.  He attended Texas Wesleyan College in Ft. Worth, Texas and then joined the U.S. Navy in 1960 and served for four years at Ream Field in Imperial Beach, California.

He married JoAnn Herring MacConnell at the First Methodist Church, here in Bonham on July 22, 1961 and they would have been married for 60 years, July 2021.

After serving in the Navy, Rich and JoAnn moved to Bonham, where he worked for General Cable for 27 years in Bonham, North Adams, Massachusetts and Visalia, California.  He then worked for Tandy Wire & Cable in Ft. Worth, Texas for 10 years and retired in November 2000. He was proudest when he served as a Volunteer Fireman and as the Choir Director at the church where they were married. He can also be remembered as the voice of the Bonham Warriors at Friday night football games as the public address announcer.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn, daughter, Nanette MacConnell Grizzle, son-in-law, Jay of Paris, Texas, Grandson Nick Grizzle,  his wife Stacy and, Great Grandchildren Ben and Samantha of Rowlett, Texas. His brother and sister, Eddie and Sally MacConnell.  Sister-in-laws, Nelda Cone of Bonham, and Myra Gandy and  husband Les, niece Leslie Wills all of Stephenville, Texas and several nephews. Last but not least, his precious dog, Andy.

Preceding in death were his parents, father and mother- in- law Chester and Iris Herring.  Brother-in-law Jamie Cone and nephews Scott and Bryan Cone.

In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the First United Methodist Church in Bonham, Our Story & Mission - United States Navy Memorial, Fannin County Children's Center, or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in his memory.
