IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Patricia McElhannon
Liddell
December 16, 1929 – March 15, 2026
Patricia McElhannon Liddell went to be with her Lord on March 15, 2026, at the age of 96. Pat was born in the Village of Perry, Wyoming County, New York on December 16, 1929, to Thayer Ethelbert Doubleday and Marion Elizabeth Main Doubleday.
She graduated from Bliss High School in New York in 1946. A few years later, she and her family moved to San Benito, Texas. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Jack McElhannon, on September 23, 1950. The story goes that when he spotted her at the beach one day he said "That is the girl I am going to marry!" They made their first home in Aransas Pass, Texas. Jack began his football coaching career there and Pat was an executive assistant at the Local Ford dealership.
Jack and Pat made a move in January of 1960, to Bonham, Texas, where Jack continued his love of teaching and coaching the Bonham Purple Warriors. Pat was a huge football fan and her forever favorite teams were the Fighting Purple Warriors and the Dallas Cowboys. She was known for packing her famous "Cowboy Cookies" and hot chocolate to the cold Friday night games. Pat is preceded in death by Jack McElhannon in 1977.
After moving to Bonham, she was the church secretary at First Baptist Church where she was a member for many years. Later, she became an administrative assistant at Bonham High School. She was a Blue Bird leader, enjoyed playing golf, trips to the beach, her Hallmark movies and traveling the world. Another favorite pasttime was playing gin rummy in tournaments or with friends. One of her greatest pleasures was teaching her grandchildren the game! She loved accounting and avidly enjoyed the stock market.
Pat met her second husband Newton Liddell, Jr., of Harlingen, Texas, in 1979. She was visiting family and taking college courses in accounting when her professor set up a blind date for her to meet his friend Newton. After a whirlwind summer of dating, they married on August 18, 1979. They were happily married for twenty-three years. During their marriage, Pat was President and a director of Economy Lumber Co., in Brownsville, TX. She and Newton were married until his death in 2002.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Thayer Doubleday, sister Barbara Powell and special friend Tom Brahaney.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Butler (Charles) of Bonham, TX, son, John David McElhannon of Flower Mound, TX., stepson, Robert Liddell (Debby) of Kingwood, TX., and sister Linda Montemayor of Brownsville, TX.
She was blessed with her grandchildren: Chase Butler (Ashley), Caitlin Butler Boothe (Barry), Hunter Liddell, Hart Liddell, Blake Perkins and Preston Perkins in addition to five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you from the family to Janet and the staff at Celebration Senior Living and to the Visionary Home Health & Birdie Hospice for their loving, compassionate care.
A private family committal service will be held at Willow Wild Cemetery officiated by Pat's nephew, Dr. Toby Snowden of High Pointe Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, her children have requested for any contributions in her memory be made to: High Pointe Baptist Church, 101 High Pointe Ln, Cedar Hill, TX 75104.
