Mary Lou Nix, age 71, of Bonham, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at TMC Denison on Sunday, September 27, following a sudden illness.

Born on August 18, 1955, in Mount Pleasant, Texas, to Bill and Nell Nix, Mary grew up attending local schools until junior high, when her family relocated after her father accepted a position at Bonham VPG. She went on to graduate from Bonham High School in 1973 and later studied photography at East Texas State University.

A woman of diverse talents and passions, Mary enjoyed a rich and fulfilling professional life. She began her career as a teller at Bonham State Bank, worked for EDS in Dallas, and ultimately retired as a medical administrative assistant from the Bonham VA Medical Center. In her retirement, she co-owned and operated the boutique Backroads and Blacktops Creations with her close friend Vickie Davis. A gifted storyteller, Mary captured meaningful moments through her photography and authored a book sharing stories of her childhood adventures. She was also deeply committed to her community, serving for several years on the board of directors for the Fannin County Crisis Center.

An avid athlete from a young age, Mary played softball for many years in the Fannin County women’s leagues and also enjoyed tennis and golf. Creative and hands-on, she loved crafting and repurposing items, particularly working with wood, and spent countless hours researching and preserving her family genealogy.

Whether spending time at the beach or the lake, Mary found endless joy in being near the water. She had a deep love for progressive country music concerts and always enjoyed trips to the casino—especially when luck was on her side! Generous to a fault and a true organizer who made things happen, Mary cherished her family, maintained a wonderfully large circle of friends, and remained a devoted, active member of the High School Class of 1973.

Rooted in the Baptist faith, Mary lived out her early upbringing through a lifetime of joyful and quiet service to countless individuals and organizations. Mary was an extremely strong and determined woman to the very day she became so ill; her health had been in decline over the last several years, but she still had many plans for future trips, projects, and concerts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Billy Charles Nix and Nell Barrow Nix. She has survived by her brother Charles Nix and wife Dana of Bonham, her nieces, Heather, Mosrie, and husband Dave of Austin and Katie Hrncir and husband Stephen of Port Lavaca, her great-nephews Nicholas Mosrie of Austin, Mason Mosrie of Fort Collins, Colorado, Matthew and Grayson Hrncir of Port Lavaca, and her great-niece Madeline Mosrie of Seattle, Washington. She also leaves behind a tremendous group of friends that she loved dearly, including her beloved pets: Dixie, JoJo, Pistol, and Annie.

Services will be held at Wise Funeral Home chapel in Bonham at 10 am on Saturday, October 3, with visitation Friday night at the Wise Funeral Home Chapel from 5- 7 p.m. Burial will follow at the Emory City Cemetery in Emory. Pallbearers are Rusty Davis, Brett Stone, Dave Mosrie, Phil Whisenhunt, Jake Heflin, Steve Haupt, and Trent Castleberry. Honorary pallbearers are: Nicholas Mosrie, Mason Mosrie,Stephen Hrncir, Matthew Hrncir, Grayson Hrncir, Homer Barker, Dan Hale, and Ken Johnson.

The family has requested that donations be sent to the Fannin County Family Crisis Center.
