Lois Marie Horton Maxwell was born on January 6th, 1927, at home, to parents Fletcher and Sally Horton of Lannius, TX. Lois was the youngest of twelve brothers and sisters. She passed away on August 1, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She spent her young life working on the family farm in Lannius, working in the field, and driving grain trucks to Windom. When she was just four years old, she began learning to play the fiddle, which quickly led to the guitar, mandolin, accordion, dulcimer and piano. Her family traveled the county performing at town events, and sharing their talent. In 1944, she graduated from Windom High School. While touring with the Ruby Allmond band, she met the love of her life. She married James Henry Maxwell on November 1 ,1947, and they were married for 49 years until his death. In 1963 they moved their family to Dodd City, Texas. Together they had three children Donna, Gary and Vicki. Lois worked at Bonham Manufacturing sewing garments during World War II. In 1964 she began working at Dodd City ISD in the school cafeteria serving the school and students with a smile until her first retirement in 1993. Only to go back part time from 1995 to 2001. She returned to work in 2006, after babysitting great grand kids, and officially retiring in 2015. She was a member of the Lannius Methodist Church and of the Methodist faith. She served faithfully as their pianist until she was 94. Throughout her entire life she devoted herself to joyfully serving and loving others, especially her family. Lois was a Hornet fan through and through. She loved her Dodd City community and enjoyed watching all of the activities at the school from her front porch and back patio. She was "Nanny" to anyone who crossed her path.
She was greeted in heaven by her husband, James Maxwell, grandson, Timmy Chapman, mama & papa, eight brothers, three sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her three children: Donna and Glen Chapman of Paris, Gary Maxwell of Dodd City, and Vicki and Nathan Rogers of Dodd City, grandchildren, Todd and Megan Chapman, Cody and Jamie Chapman, Rachel West Bogonia, Candace and Dillon Weeks, Casey and Ashley Rogers, Colby and Kassie Rogers, Cassidi and Noah Stroud, twenty great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Pallbearers: Todd Chapman, Cody Chapman, Parker Chapman, Casey Rogers, Colby Rogers, Gavin Rogers & ; Austin Weeks, Honorary Pallbearers: Ace Rogers, Judd Rogers, River Rogers, Sloan Rogers, Lincoln Stroud, Finn Rogers, and Hayes Rogers. Her grandson Casey Rogers will be officiating her service.
Please join the family on Friday, August 4, 2023 from 6pm to 8pm at the Chapel of Wise Funeral Home for visitation. The funeral service is set for Saturday, August 5, 2023 at 2pm at the same location with burial to follow at Smyrna Cemetery.
