Graveside services with military honors for Lewen Jefferson "Jack" Burk, 90, of Dodd City, will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 19, 2015 at Dodd City Cemetery under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Chaplain Mark Posey will officiate. Jack passed away Thursday night, January 15, 2015 at Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham, Texas.
Jack was born Oct. 30, 1924 in the Carson Community of Fannin County, Texas, the son of Lewen Chester Burk and Gracie Mae Deets Burk. Attended schools in Hilger and Bailey Inglish and worked on the family farm. He married Lavonia Pearl McKenzie on Dec. 21, 1945 in Bonham, Texas. Jack was a US Army veteran of WWII serving in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland. He was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Purple Heart. He also received the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. On Nov. 2, 2014 Jack was awarded the Medal of Chevalier De La Legion D'Honneur, the highest medal France gives, one of only 19 in Texas to receive it. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the George B. Dealey Masonic Lodge in Dallas and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite in Garland. He was a member and former vice commander of the DAV in Bonham and a member of the American Legion in Mesquite. Jack served as scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts in Garland and was also a girls softball coach. He was a shipping/receiving clerk at Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham and later worked for LTV in Grand Prairie. After moving to Garland, he was employed with Space Corporation/Marmon Motors and retired from Cuplex Electronics. He and Lavonia returned to Fannin County in 1986 where he enjoyed fishing and camping. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Ruby Jewell Howell Burk, sisters, Jean Burk Sagely and Doris May Burk, brothers, Glenn Burk, Wayne Burk and Albert Franklin Burk, and granddaughter, Autumn Whitfield.
Jack is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lavonia Burk of Dodd City, Texas; two daughters, Barbara Ann Burk Carrell Rivera (Ignacio) of Mesquite, Texas and Debbie Jo Burk Whitfield (Perry) of Bonham, Texas;
brother, Bob J. Burk (Debbie) of Paris, Texas; sister, Kay Burk Lumpkins (Ronnie) of Leonard, Texas; three grandchildren, Jacky D. Carrell, Elizabeth Ann Carrell Aikman and Aaron Ray Rivera; nine
great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews extended family and friends.
