Lavonia Pearl Mckenzie Burk

April 14, 1927 — April 3, 2022

Bonham

Lavonia Pearl (McKenzie) Burk was born on April 14, 1927, in Bonham, Texas, the daughter of Asa and Annie (Lowery) McKenzie.  Sis, as she was known by most, passed away on April 3, 2022.  She was only 11 days away from her 95 th birthday.

She was raised in Bonham but moved to Dallas during the war.  Her mom was one of the first females to go to work at Airplane factory for the war effort.  Sis attended school while waiting for her soldier to return.  She first met him when she was seven.

December 21, 1945, Lewen Jefferson "Jack" Burk and Lavonia were married.  He was so anxious; he gave her one week to get a wedding together after arriving home from the War.  Together, they raised two daughters.

Lavonia was proud to be a member of the Eastern Star and of the United Daughters of the Confederacy under two grandfathers.  She was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.  Her proudest honor was being a scout mom for Boy Scouts of America Troop 750.  She was scout mom to many young men including grandson, Jacky, who she raised as her own.  Jack and Sis still had scouts visit them after they became men.  She collected many items through the years, but her favorite was military patches.  She started this during the war, talking soldiers out of patches while working at the bus station in Dallas.

She is survived by daughters, Barbara Rivera (Ignacio) and Debbie Whitfield (Perry), four grandchildren, Jacky, Elizabeth, Aaron, Andrea, nine great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren, one three times great grandchild.

Sis was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Opal, and Margorie, one brother, Donald, granddaughter, Autumn Whitfield and beloved husband, Jack.

The family gives a heartful thank you to all of the angels from Guardian Hospice.

In honor of Sis' request, a private graveside was held at Dodd City Cemetery with no plan for funeral services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the Scottish Rite.
