Lanelle Southerland, retired public school teacher and counselor, died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Wilson N. Jones hospital in Sherman. She was 88 years old.
Lanelle was born January 2, 1924 in Windom, Texas to Claud and Pearl Lewis Elliott. She had many fond memories and stories of growing up in Windom with her brother Bub Elliot and cousins Glen and D.L. Elliot with whom she was very close. She graduated from Windom High School and three years later returned to Windom as a High School Teacher, after having graduated from Texas State College for Women in Denton. Her career as a public school teacher and counselor spanned four decades. She was also active in adult education in North Texas.
Lanelle married C.J. (Dick) Phillips in 1944. In 1946, their son Joe E. Phillips was born. After Dick's passing, she later married Ed Southerland.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claud and Pearl Elliott, her brother Bub Elliott, her husband Dick Phillips, and husband Ed Southerland. She is survived by her son Joe Phillips and his wife Kathy and family of Anchorage, Alaska; nephew Claud Elliott of Windom, Niece Suzanne Elliott Strong of Dallas, and great-nephew Zane Sommers of Dallas.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 7, 2012 in the Wise Funeral Home Chapel in Bonham. Rev. Morgan Malone will officiate. Family visitation will be held at 10:00 A.M. prior to services. A private burial will take place at a later date.
