Graveside services for Joyce Carlton, 87, of Ivanhoe, Texas, will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, Nov. 25, 2016 in Willow Wild Cemetery under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Joyce passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 20, 2016 at Denton Rehabilitation in Denton, Texas.
Joyce was born Dec. 19, 1928 in the Bettes Community (near Ivanhoe) of Fannin County, Texas, the daughter of Ova Earl Carlton and Bessie Mae Cooper Carlton. She was a graduate of Bonham High School and received her Masters of Education from East Texas State University in Commerce. Joyce began her teaching career in Texas City, Texas, and later taught in Dallas ISD for over 35 years before retiring. She received a number of awards in including Texas Teacher of the Year in 1979 and the Ross Perot award for Excellence in Education. Joyce was a lifetime member of Ivanhoe Baptist Church where she was the pianist for many years. She was an active member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. Most recently, Joyce volunteered as a "Pink Lady" at Red River Regional Hospital in Bonham. She traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states and several countries. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Veona Carlton Hughes and Betty Carlton Bradford.
Joyce is survived by her Sister, Glenda Carlton Mulkey of Bonham, Texas; three Nephews, four Nieces, and numerous great nieces and nephews; and her very close friend of 61 years, Jimmye Phillips of Bells, Texas.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Ivanhoe Baptist Church, 4063 N. FM 273, Ivanhoe, TX 75447.
