Obituary

Janice Ellen Allen passed away on August 12, 2026, in Arlington, Texas at the age of 79. She passed peacefully at home surrounded by family, friends, and lots of love. Jan is survived by her stepson, Clint Allen and his wife, Sarah, and her stepdaughter, Mary Thedford and her husband, Wes; and her cousins, Tim Trone and his wife, Barbara, Joe Kinnick and his wife, Kathy, Cyndi Pierce and her husband, John, Kristina Fipps, Marsha Harner, Richard Craig and his wife, Sammye Burnett, Carla Williams and her husband, Richard, and Andrew Beattie and his wife, Lynn.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Allen, Jr. Jan was born in Dallas, Texas on March 11, 1947. She grew up in Dallas with her many cousins, who were truly like brothers and sisters. She attended the University of North Texas to study music. Jan married Lee Allen in 1992 in Dallas, Texas at Oaklawn Methodist Church. Jan and Lee were a striking couple, and they enjoyed 23 years of blissful marriage before Lee passed away in 2015.

Jan was a distinguished realtor who won many awards throughout her career. She later started a mortgage company, Callender Mortgage, with her husband Lee. After years of making her famous homemade salsa, she finally decided to commercially produce and sell her artisan salsa under the name Bugtussle Burn. The Burn made its way onto the shelves of stores such as Central Market and Whole Foods. She especially loved selling the Burn at the Texas State Fair with Lee and her friends.

Jan had a deep and abiding love of animals, and her pets were her heart. She had many beloved pets, including dogs (especially her German Shepherd rescues), cats, donkeys, and even an adopted elephant. She was also very active in several animal rescue groups, in particular Good Shepherd Rescue of Texas. Along with animals, Jan loved all things music. She sang in the church choir throughout her life, including at First United Methodist Church of Bonham. She also sang at friends’ weddings, at nursing homes, and even as a backup singer for bands and professional musicians. Jan also loved to see live music, as documented by her impressive collection of VIP and backstage passes to incredible concerts by Prince, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, and Peter Garbriel, among many others.

Jan was very active and loved to play tennis. She loved to watch tennis even more, that is if her cherished Rafa was playing. Jan also trained for and ran the Dallas White Rock Marathon in 1989, an accomplishment of which she was very proud. Jan was truly a world traveler with a stack of stamp-filled passports. It would be easier to list the places she didn’t visit, but a few “bucket list” trips she enjoyed were a safari trip to Tanzania, a spiritual journey through India and Nepal, and attending the French Open to see Rafa play in person.

Jan will be dearly missed, but for those lucky enough to know Jan well, their lives are far better for it. Her candle was extinguished, but her light carries on.
