Funeral services for James Ray Hicks, "Pepaw", 80, of Ector, will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, Nov. 20, 2015 in Ector Baptist Church under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Bro. Max Chandler and Bro Morris Cook will officiate. Burial will follow in Carson Cemetery in Ector, Texas. James Ray passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015.
James Ray was born Feb. 9, 1935 in Savoy, Texas, the son of Claude Earl Hicks, Sr. and Price Ray Hicks. He was a 1953 graduate of Ector High School. James Ray married Murilyn Dendy on June 28, 1952 at New Zion Baptist Church in Ector. He was a longtime member and Deacon of Ector Baptist Church. James Ray was a carpenter and owned and operated Hicks-Bilt. He served for decades on the Fannin County Soil & Water Conservation Board and the Fannin County Electric Co-Op Board. He enjoyed mission trips, one of which took him to Tokyo, Japan. He also enjoyed working on local churches in Texas and Colorado. He loved spending time with his family and fishing. James Ray was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, David Hicks and three sisters, Gladys Strealy, Mary McCulloch and Frances Wilkerson.
James Ray is survived by his wife, Murilyn Hicks of Hicksville, Texas;
two sons, Gary Ray Hicks (Rhonda) and Wesley Hicks (Lisa) all of Hicksville, Texas; daughter, Deborah Green of Bonham, Texas; brother, Claude Earl Hicks (Jean) of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren, Kristina & Cody Nelson, Jared & Anna Hicks, Eric & Heather Hicks, Zachary Green, Ethan Hicks, and Isaac & Rebecca Hicks;
great grandchildren, Landon & Jaden Nelson; Presley, Westin & Hunter Hicks, and Grady & Gentry Hicks; and extended family and a host of friends.
