Geneva Winnie Carlton Atnip, age 93, of Bonham, TX completed her race, kept the faith and went home to be with the Lord on July 26, 2017. She was born on June 15, 1924 near Gober, TX to Lake and Gracie Dewoody Carlton.
Geneva was preceded in death by her parents; sister Rachel Templeton; brother Herbert Carlton and husband James E. Atnip, all of Bonham. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Joe Shelton of Sanger, TX; sons and daughters-in-law Ronnie & Brenda Atnip of Bonham, and Larry & Vickie Atnip of Pilot Point, TX. Also six grandchildren: Gary Shelton of Ponder, TX, Jeff Shelton of Buda, TX, Dana Ostos of Corpus Christi, TX, Ashley Gibson of Melissa, TX, Christa Hawk of Gunter, TX and Bryan Sammons of Aubrey, TX, plus thirteen great grandchildren. She referred to the greats as the "Dirty Dozen".
Early in her life Geneva confessed her faith in our Lord and was saved. All of the following years she worked tirelessly to serve Him teaching Sunday school, visiting nursing homes and worshiped at the Congregational Methodist Church in Bonham, where she was a founding member. Much of her life proved challenging with economic hardship raising three (sometimes unruly) children, working nights at the Bonham Cotton Mill, losing both her father and husband within three months in 1976 and surviving cancer in 1980. She also worked many years for E.J. Brent, Exxon distributor in Bonham, the Fannin County Superintendent of Schools office and the VA Center. Geneva loved life, people and her farm animals and pets. Through any and all adversities, she somehow always managed to be positive and tried to look on the bright side of things. She touched many lives and instilled in her family the highest set of virtues and work ethic by providing a prime example of how a life should be lived. She was well loved by all who knew her. The world is a better place because of her life and we are all diminished by her passing. Mother, may your rewards be great.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 30. 2017 at Wise Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will immediately follow at the Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham, next to her husband of 35 years.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM on Sunday, prior to the service at Wise Funeral Home Chapel.
