Elva Jo Lewis Smith was born on October 14, 1938 to the late Hollis E. Lewis and Elva Naomi Neal Lewis Mahler in Durant, Oklahoma. She passed away peacefully at Pikes Peak Hospice at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado on January 9, 2021. Elva Jo was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 59 years, Rollin C. Smith.
While still young, Elva Jo moved with her family from Oklahoma to Richmond, California, where she graduated from Richmond High School. She met Rollin C. Smith while in high school, and they married a few years after graduation in 1959. She had a number of jobs, but she retired from Pacific Bell in California after working there many years.
She loved to sew, making many of her clothes in her young years, and enjoyed crafting and going on driving trips with her husband. She was known for creating beautiful flower gardens in her backyards. After retirement, she and Rollin moved to Bonham, Texas and later to Denison, Texas.
She was active in her church in California and also in Bonham, Texas at Living Word Church of God, serving at church functions, caring for church members, and giving so much of herself to the work of the Lord.
When her husband passed in 2018, she moved to Colorado Springs to be near family.
Elva Jo is survived by her sister Lynda L. Lewis McCaleb (husband Bruce McCaleb) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; niece Debra L. McCaleb Andre (husband Terence S. Andre) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nephew Jeffrey S. McCaleb (wife Renee McCaleb) of Livermore, California; Aunt Betty Lewis of Bonham, Texas; many cousins, and many great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the Wise Funeral Home Chapel 219 W. Sam Rayburn Dr. Bonham, Texas. Pastor Eddy Prince will officiate. Burial will follow in the Albany Cemetery in Oklahoma. Pallbearers will be Bruce McCaleb, Terence Andre, Zachary Andre, Jeff McCaleb, Justin McCaleb, Daniel McCaleb, Bruce Ivy and Glen Chesser.
