Donald Ray Blevins went to meet his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 7, 2014. Don died in his home in Bonham, Texas.
Don Blevins was born September 2, 1934 in the Valley Creek Community to Loyd and Mable Blevins. He was a member of the last graduating class of Randolph High School. He served in the United States Army and later the Air Force Reserves.
Don is best known around Bonham for two businesses he owned and operated. He first owned the Speedway Convenience Stores. In 1976, he opened the Hickory Bar-B-Q. The restaurant is still a family business today due, in large part, to the legacy of hard work and friendly customer service Don modeled.
He was an ordained deacon, faithfully serving at Calvary Baptist Church and, most recently, at Boyd Baptist Church.
Don is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Young Blevins; daughter, Donna Leadford and her husband, Ken, of Celina, TX; son, Phil Blevins of Bonham; and daughter, Christi Pelt and her husband, Hunter, of Wylie, TX. One of Don's greatest joys was becoming "Daddy Don" to six grandsons: Chad and Chris Gilson, Blake and Riley Blevins, and Mason and Landon Pelt. In recent years, Don welcomed granddaughters, Ashley and Kristen Leadford and Laura Gilson.
Don is also survived by his two beloved sisters, Jean Behrens of Beaumont, TX and Nina Flowers and her husband, Bob, of Paris, TX. Don also leaves behind cousins, nieces, and nephews, all whom were very special to him.
Graveside services for Don will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 10th at the Arledge Ridge Cemetery south of Bonham under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Also on Thursday, the family will receive visitors from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Boyd Baptist Church, north of Bonham. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Boyd Baptist Church beginning at 2:00 p.m., immediately following the time of family visitation.
Officiating Donald Blevins' graveside service will be his good friend, Chaplain Mark Posey. The afternoon memorial service will be officiated by two faithful friends and former pastors, the Reverend Ted White of Longview, TX and the Reverend Jerry Clements of Joshua, TX. Don's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
As Don's health deteriorated in recent years, he was not able to work at his much loved Hickory BBQ. However, each Wednesday, he would be taken for lunch at the restaurant and meet special friends at the "round table." Honorary pallbearers will be this group of friends who joined Don for lunch on Wednesdays during his final years. They are: Mark Posey, David Kinkade, Jeff Kinkade, Don Kinkade, Jeff Stoggsdill, Charles Pratt, Lynn Kincade, Weldon Brown, Carl Waterson, and John Lindsey.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons International, where a Bible may be purchased in Don's memory. Their address is PO Box 140800 Nashville, TN 37214 or online at www.gideons.org/sendtheword. Donations may also be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at www.michaeljfox.org.
The family would like to thank Dr. J.M. Benson as well as Northeast Medical Home Health and VITAS Hospice Service for their love and care. It was because of their help Don was able to be at home in his final days.
