Don Hunter Cockerham entered the glorious gates of Heaven on March 4, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and craftsmanship that will be cherished by his family, all those who formed long and lasting friendships with him, and all who did business with him over the years.
Born on May 24, 1947, to William and Norma Cockerham in Palestine, TX, Don's journey was marked by an undying love for his family, unwavering service to his Lord, commitment to service in his church and community, and a passion for building a career around exceptional customer service. On January 22, 1966, he exchanged vows with the love of his life, Harriett Sipes, in Palestine, TX, embarking on a journey of love and companionship that lasted over 55 years. His career path led him through various endeavors, from managing the Sears Department store in Bonham, Texas, during his early years, to becoming a self-employed antique and furniture repairman. For 38 years, he owned and operated Antiques Plus, where he showcased his remarkable skills in repairing and restoring countless pieces of furniture. His expertise knew no bounds; he could transform the most damaged pieces into stunning works of art, leaving a lasting impression on all who admired his handiwork. We have no doubt that many of the pieces he restored have become family heirlooms for generations to admire and enjoy. Beyond his professional pursuits, Don found joy in simple pleasures. He enjoyed spending time tinkering in his workshop, exploring the great outdoors through camping and travel, and contributing his time and talents to various church and city committees and activities. His legacy of generosity and love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Throughout his life, even in later years when his health began to decline and he had to overcome many obstacles, Don had a remarkably witty and undying sense of humor. He could make light of the most dire situations, and crack the most unexpected jokes at the most surprising times! He had many close, lifelong friendships and he cherished those relationships beyond measure. He loved all of the visits from his friends and could talk about anything and everything under the sun with them and enjoyed every minute of it. His family would like to thank everyone who showed him so much love and support over the last few years. Don's greatest source of pride and happiness came from supporting his grandchildren in their pursuits. Whether it was cheering them on at football games, attending band concerts, or applauding their theatrical and ballet performances, he was always there with constant love, support, and adoration. Don was blessed to have spent the majority of his life with his beloved wife and best friend, Harriett.
Don was unconditionally loved by his three daughters and sons-in-law, whom he thought the world of: Janice and Keith Henslee, Sherry and Jay Woodson, Donna and David Hale. The grandchildren who so affectionately called him G-Man are Lydia, Colton and Garrison Henslee, Jason and Brandon Alonzo, & Dawson and Delaney Hale. His niece, Mary Cockerham and his sister-in-law, Mary Wallis will also cherish his memory.
Rest in peace, daddy and G-Man. You will be missed beyond measure but we will never forget you and all the precious memories we made together. Our unwavering faith ensures we will see you again. Until then, may your spirit continue to shine brightly in our hearts, guiding us with
love and compassion in all that we do.
