Funeral services for David Thurman Nelson, 76, of the Boyd Community, will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013 in Wise Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Rex Jackson and Chaplain Mark Posey will officiate. Burial will follow in Carson Cemetery in Ector, Texas. David passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.
David was born June 13, 1937 at home in the Boyd Community of Fannin County, Texas, the son of William Clarence Nelson, Sr. and Opal Lucille Carpenter Nelson. He married LaVerne Hale, the love of his life, on Dec. 19, 1958. David served in the U. S. Army Reserves from 1959-1962. During this time when mobilized in 1960, he served one year in the Army in Fort Polk, Louisiana as a cook in the officer's mess hall. David worked for General Cable Co. from 1962-1972, and as a building contractor from 1972-1978. He was then employed at Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham from 1978 until his retirement in 1999. David enjoyed gardening, restoring antique vehicles and spending time with his family. A very dedicated man, his family was always the most important thing in his life. He loved watching westerns, reading and visiting with friends and family, or even a perfect stranger. David was a member of Boyd Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bobby Dean Nelson and Randell Miller Nelson.
David is survived by his wife of 54 years, LaVerne Nelson of the Boyd Community; daughters, Vicki Bellows and husband, Tommy of Ector, Texas and Kelly Baker and husband, Johnny of Ravenna, Texas;
grandchildren, Colt Bellows and wife April and great granddaughter, Hadley, of Ector, Texas; Kathryn Cater and husband, Eric and great grandchildren, Chayson, Paysley and Truely; Lauren Dickson and husband, Chris, great grandson, Levi, and Kristopher Crutcher and wife, Charlee, all of Bonham, Texas;
Dusty Baker and wife, Kellie and Corey Baker and wife, Kristi, and their children of Ravenna, Texas; and Lizann Rogers and husband, Justin of Chicago, Illinois;
brothers, William Clarence Nelson, Jr. "Dub" and wife, Janet,
Larry Nelson and wife, Nelda, and
Michael Nelson and wife, Gloria;
sister, Charlotte Grooms and husband, Kenneth; sister-in-law, Janis Nelson Word and husband, Sam; numerous nieces and nephews, and a multitude of extended family and close friends.
Pallbearers will be sons-in-law, Tommy Bellows and Johnny Baker and grandsons, Colt Bellows, Kristopher Crutcher, Chris Dickson and Eric Cater.
Memorials may be made to Boyd Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
