Funeral services for Daniel "Dan" Howard McRae, age 94, of Sherman, Texas, will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at the Wise Funeral Home Chapel, 219 W. Sam Rayburn Dr., Bonham, Texas. Masonic rites will follow the service in the chapel. The graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on February 8, 2022, at the Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park, 5725 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, Texas 76034, with military honors. Mr. McRae was a resident of Sherman and Irving, Texas for many years. He passed away on January 30, 2022, at TMC Hospital in Denison, Texas.
Dan was born on December 9, 1927, in Ivanhoe, Texas, the son of William R. McRae and Mary Alline Willis McRae. Working hard was important to Dan. Even as a teen, he would deliver milk early in the morning, go to school, then play football after. He was a 1945 graduate of Bonham High School and attended SMU. Soon after, he joined the US Army Air Corp. where he served in the occupation of Japan after World War II. He married Sara Frances McKeon on July 2,1949. They later divorced and she preceded him in death. He later married Florence "Flo" Haddox, on February 28, 1970, and she preceded him in death on April 13,1983. He worked for the Texas & Pacific Railway Company, then later the Missouri Pacific Railway Company as a commercial freight rater from 1947-1957. He worked for Hick's Music Company from 1961-1989, becoming President in 1969. During that time, he also owned and operated several liquor stores in the West Love Field area of Dallas. From 1989- 2020, he served as Director, and later Director Emeritus for McRae Vending Company. He served as Manager for The Spare Room Self Storage and U-Haul from 1992-2021. Dan was an active member of the Travis Masonic Lodge in Sherman and also a member of the Whiterock Lodge in Addison, where he was Past Master. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Hella Temple Shrine, and York Rite. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Bonham, Texas.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William R. "Bill" McRae and Donald W. McRae; sisters, Louise Moore, Mary Modisett, and Shirley Dillard.
He is survived by sons Charles Daniel McRae and wife, Judy, of Denison, Gregory Patrick McRae and wife, Holly, of Sherman, Michael Christopher McRae of Dallas, and Phillip Jeffrey McRae of Euless, brother, Richard Lynn "Dick" McRae of Arlington; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends at Wise Funeral Home Chapel in Bonham from 9:00 AM until service time on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to one of the causes Dan supported: St. Jude's, Shriner's, ASPCA, or the Red Cross.
