Cleayton John Mills was born May 6, 1936, at the home of his Grandparents, Cleayton and Mary Mills, in Quinton, N.J. His parents were Cleayton Franklin Mills and Berenice Vining Mills. Cleayton grew up in Salem, NJ, on Allen Avenue where he met his life-long friend, Joel Vittori, who not surprisingly was born on May 6, 1936 as well.
Cleayton attended public schools in Salem and graduated from Salem High School in 1954. He attended Potomac State Jr. College in Keyser, W. VA , and on to The University of West Virginia in Morgantown, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Cleayton met his wife of 60 years, Janice Cawman, at the Methodist Youth Fellowship
in the Salem Methodist church.
Cleayton's vocation – manufacturing quality - led him to work at IBM , Unisys, Memorex and Nortel from which he retired. His vocation moved the family to NJ, NY, CA, Japan, Virginia and finally to North Texas. The family is grateful for the many places they lived and for the wonderful people they met along the way.
Cleayton contracted memory loss which eventually took his life on October 28, 2017. The family expresses their appreciation to the staffs of TMC Bonham Hospital, the Bonham Ambulance Crew, Plano Heart Hospital, Mullican's Nursing Home and Wise Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, brother, Donald, sons – Cleayton John, Jr., wife Mary – (Elizabeth, Matt, Carina, Melissa, Mia) Steven Williamson, wife Joleen (Katrina, Mariah, Hannah, Amelia) daughter, Diana McGuire, husband Loren (Nathaniel, Amber, Joshua) his brother and sister-in laws – George and Kathy Cawman, Betty Ruth and Joe Griscom - his nephews – Tom Mills and Don Mills, Steven Cawman and niece, Amy Cawman, several great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his cousins – Shirley Derrick, Diana Sutherland, Lance Vining and their families.
Cleayton's love of people was a center post in his life.
Services to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, November 1 at 11 AM in the McKinney FUMC, 315 N Church St. in McKinney led by Dr. Tommy Brummett. His cremains will be interred in his home town of Salem, NJ, at a future date.
Memorials in Cleayton's name might be made to the Bonham Fire Department, the FUMC choir in McKinney or the organization of your choice.
