Cherilyn Jean "Cheri" Rettig Shores of Ivanhoe, Texas, lost her courageous battle with brain cancer on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the too young age of 63. Born on July 13, 1953 in Paulding, Ohio, her parents moved when she was a little girl to Jackson County in northwest Florida where she was raised on a working ranch. A 1971 graduate of Marianna High School, she received her AA degree from Chipola Jr. College in 1973. On September 14, 1974 she married Will Shores, also of Marianna, and started her great adventure. As a USMC officer's wife, she lived in Quantico, VA, Pensacola, FL, Whidbey Island, WA (twice), Cherry Point, NC, Patuxent River, MD and Lemoore, CA. After returning to civilian life, Cheri lived in St. Charles, MO and Bedford, NH before finally moving to Cedar Hill, Texas in 2006. She returned to her childhood roots by moving to a ranch in Ivanhoe, Texas in 2014.
Cheri was a retired paraprofessional who volunteered to work with special-needs children in Missouri and New Hampshire. She excelled at crafts, especially needlework, and was an accomplished cook, seamstress and homemaker. Perhaps her greatest gifts were her patience and listening skills, and because of these she had many devoted friends who loved her greatly. She had a servant's heart and was compassionate and kind to all, epitomizing a Proverbs 31 wife, mom, Nana, and servant. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, she dedicated her life in service to Him, family, church and community. Her patient, gentle and humble spirit was an example to all, but there was no one stronger and more of a warrior in fighting her brain cancer. Through surgery, radiations and chemotherapies, she remained positive and strong, always trusting in God, always doing her best, and never complaining.
With her passing, a special light has gone out of the world. But we take comfort that her struggle is over, and she now is at perfect peace at Home.
Cheri is survived by her grieving husband of 42 years, William "Will" Shores of Ivanhoe, Texas, three sons, William Jr. "Brad" and wife, Nikki of Wichita, Kansas, Kenneth "Ken" and wife, Aleksandra of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Christopher "Chris" and wife, Erin of Raleigh, North Carolina, a brother, Kent Rettig and a half-brother, Walter Rose, and many other relatives. She was Nana to three greatly loved grandsons, William III "Billy", Caden and Levi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Lurline Rettig.
Cheri's Homecoming Service will be held at 1:00 PM her home church of Telephone Baptist Church in Telephone, Texas on Saturday, October 1, 2016 with Dr. Brian Everett and Rev. Ron Branning presiding.
