Charles Austin Jones

April 28, 1933 — May 21, 2023

Savoy

Charles Austin Jones passed away peacefully from this life at his home on May 21, 2023 at the age of 90 years and 23 days.  He was surrounded by his family throughout this last chapter of life.  Austin was born April 28, 1933 to Charlie and Hope Jones somewhere north of Savoy.  He was the second of six children.  Austin was raised west of Ravenna on his family's farm.  He was a graduate of Savoy High School and a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War.  On June 23, 1956 he married Velma Cain and about a year later they bought their place on the Red River where he remained until his passing.  Together they raised two daughters on their place.  Austin spent his life working hard.  He was the type of man to work from sun up to sun down.  He had several public jobs such as a truck driver, working for DeRose Industries, and Southwest Pump, but his main job was taking care of his place.  He was a cowboy in every sense of the word.  He never wore anything but cowboy boots, a hat and blue jeans.  He had many horses throughout his life and he also rode and broke horses for the public.  He was a cattleman and believed you worked your cows horseback.  The crack of the bullwhip still lingers.  Austin was a self-taught farrier and had the little 'red' book to prove it.

Austin was a meticulous person, loved the color red, drove red trucks, and enjoyed listening to Elvis.  A good western with Clint Eastwood or the Price Is Right were about his limit on TV.  Lastly, Austin was a man of few words, but when he spoke, most people listened.

Austin is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Velma, two daughters and their families: Kathy and Kenny and their family… John-Austin, Seanna, Peyton & Paisley, Kaylee, and Morgan; Karol and James and their family... Kortni, Damon, Dylan & Halle, Audra, Katie, Clay, Harper & Wade; siblings, Darlene (Joe) and Phil (Judy) and several nieces and nephews.

Austin is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Hope; three sisters, Clarice, Earle, and Jerry; one grandson, Rod, and all of his Cain in-laws.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Mulberry Cemetery under the direction of Wise Funeral Home.  Online guest register www.wisefuneralhome.com
