Betty Tarpley has been fully restored and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on January 21th, 2018. She passed peacefully at her residence with family at bedside. She was 86 years old.
She was born in Bonham and raised by her parents Floyd and Gertrude Harper. As a young girl, she accepted Jesus as her savior and commenced her life as a follower of Christ.
She attended undergraduate studies at Texas Women's University, where she majored in Art. She married the love of her life Leroy Tarpley in 1952. They had been married for 62 years when he preceded her in death, January 2015.
Betty possessed a light that shone for the entire world to see. The source of her light was Christ, and her love and faith in His word was evident in every area of her life. She was full of spiritual wisdom, led her family, and loved to teach from the Bible. She used her spiritual gifts to brighten, encourage, admonish, teach, and disciple in grace and in truth. She did not seek affirmation for herself, but desired that God be glorified through her obedience, and through her servant leader's heart.
As a homemaker, she loved to paint, sew, knit, crochet, sing and cook. Professionally, she was employed at First National Bank for 17 years. She served as FUMC church treasurer for 8 years, and volunteered as local treasurer for the American Cancer Society for 50 years. As a state lobbyist she helped secure state legislation prohibiting tobacco marketing to children under 18.
She is survived by: brother Charles Harper and wife Betsy of Wichita Falls; sons Wayne Tarpley and wife Alice of Bonham, Jim Tarpley and wife Valerie of Denison; grandchildren Dori Howery and husband Travis of Ravenna, Aja Parks and husband Micah of Royce City, John, Claire, Bryce and Leigh Tarpley of Denison; great grandchildren Austin, Alex and husband Ethan, Ayden, Devin, Jayden, and Koen. Pallbearers will be Kelly Kemp, Austin Leatherwood, Ayden Leatherwood, John Tarpley, Travis Howery, Koen Parks and Micah Parks.
Special acknowledgement is held for her angelic caregivers, Vanessa Harrison, Donzell Jenkins, and Shonda Whitfield. Additional appreciation is held for the genuine care delivered by Guardian Hospice and Ragon's Elder Care.
Family will receive visitors Thursday evening, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Wise Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, 1pm at Wise Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Arledge Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the American Cancer Society, the First United Methodist Church of Bonham, Alzheimer's Association, or Camp Sweeney.
