Funeral services for Allen Wayne Vermillion will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 26, 2011 in the Wise Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Houston Garner officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham. The Family will receive friends at the Chapel from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Allen passed away Friday, September 23, 2011 in Bonham.
Allen Wayne Vermillion was born November 10, 1929 in the Boyd Community. He graduated from Bonham High School in 1949 where he played football, baseball and was vice president of his class. During the Korean War, Allen was drafted in the Army and passed up an offer to play professional baseball with the Cincinnati Reds. Allen was wounded in battle and received a Purple Heart. He then returned to battle and was wounded a second time and received a second Purple Heart. He also received the UN Service Medal, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged and retired as a Sergeant on July 31, 1953.
After returning from the war, he worked many years as a mechanic for Carter Chevrolet before retiring in 1983. Later in life he worked as a mechanic at Bonham Manufacturing. Allen was an avid sports fan. He loved the outdoors and throughout his life cared for all kinds of animals. He also loved bluegrass music and attended "singin's" as often as he could.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents John Rector Vermillion and Stella Maude Clements Vermillion; brother and best friend Carroll Vermillion; brother J.R. Vermillion, who was killed in action during World War II; and wife Billie Cheatham Vermillion.
Allen loved and enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He is loved dearly and will be greatly missed. He is survived by Nancy Vermillion of Bonham, daughter Kelli Bowen and husband Randy of Bonham and their children Katti and husband James Holcomb of Conway Arkansas, Kassi Bowen and Ryan Bowen of Bonham, daughter Kara Borders and husband Daylen of Kilgore, and their children Chase and Bryce. Allen is also survived by a sister Mildred Bumpas of Ivanhoe and his cherished friend and companion Clois Smith of Bonham, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Randy Bowen, Daylen Borders, Ryan Bowen, Gary Vermillion, James Holcomb, Shane Cheatham, and David Farris. Honorary Pallbearers will be Chase and Bryce Borders.
